Or sow directly into the garden if your area has a longer growing season, when the danger of frost has passed. WHERE TO PLANT CATNIP SEEDS" Catnip performs best in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun to partial shade. This plant is drought tolerant and thrives in dry soils with a pH of about 6.6. HOW TO PLANT CATNIP SEEDS: Add aged compost to the planting bed and turn it under. Make shallow furrows and cover seeds 1/8th of an inch with loose soil. Thin or transplant seedlings to 12 inches apart when they reach 2 inches tall. Keep plants full by pinching the growing stems and flowers buds when they appear. Be very careful when transplanting outdoors, as bruising the leaves will release the oils that attract felines. Water your plants only when the soil dries out. Cut catnip back to the ground in spring to improve growth and appearance. HOW TO HARVEST CATNIP: Harvest leaves by cutting the stems or shearing the flower spikes after the plant reaches 6 inches or taller. If harvesting for cats, wait until the plant blooms. The foliage will keep its scent best when air dried. You can easily propagate catnip by dividing an established plant. WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU COLD STRATIFY YOUR CATNIP SEEDS For catnip, seed sowing should occur after the seeds about been placed in a freezer overnight. After this period, allow the seeds to soak in water for a period of 24 hours. This will allow for easier and more uniform germination rates. Once the stratification process is complete, sow in seed starting trays approx 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep. Keep soil warm and moist. Seeds should germinate in 5 to 10 days. When your plants are ready to be transplanted into the garden, it is best to harden them off for a few days prior to transplanting. Catnip plants do best in full sun to partial shade and are drought tolerant. Catnip can be watered regularly but does not do well in soggy soil. It's a pretty low maintenance plant and does not need to plant food/fertilizer. Harvesting Catnip Are you harvesting for your feisty feline? The best time for picking catnip leaves is when the plants are flowering, around mid-summer. This is when the compounds that cats love most are at peak levels in the leaves. Catnip leaves should be dry when you harvest so you minimize the risks of the harvest getting moldy. WE SHIP FAST & FREE! Your orders ship the next business date after payment via US mail.
