A mint family perennial ( Monarda fistulosa ), also known as Wild Bergamot, Lavender Bergamot, Horsemint, or " BEE BALM " grows delicate crown-shaped pale pastel purple flowers and foliage with a scent reminiscent of the bergamot citrus. The flowers are very attractive to bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other native birds. This aromatic plant is a perennial that grows from creeping rhizomes, but doesn't aggressively spread. This beautiful flower is from the Mint family, but you will also smell hints of lemon and citrus in the blooms. Its beautiful shaggy lavender (sometimes pink) flowers distinguish this plant from many others. Related to thyme this plant much prefers dry, sunny locations as it can quickly develop mildew in overly moist conditions. This is a drought-resistant edible plant and it is dotted with glands that secrete aromatic oils. Once the plants have bloomed they may be cut back to obtain a second flowering. The entire Monarda genus has been historically used as a cold tea, topically as a wound poultice, and as a food / seasoning. One popular contemporary use is making Bee Balm Flower-infused honey. Edible parts: Leaves and flowers. The leaves of wild bee balm are edible raw or cooked. They are also used as a flavoring in salads and cooked foods. The flowers make an attractive edible garnish in salads. Fresh or dried flowers and (or) leaves can be brewed into an aromatic tea. Also very nice for potpourri - has a lemon citrus mint scent. Type: Perennial ; Zones: 3-9; Height: 1 -5 Ft; Light: Sun; Soil: Moist/Dry; Flowers: The lavender-colored round-shaped flowers are fragrant; Leaves: Light/Dark Green; How to Grow: P lant in spring, early summer or late fall. Fall plantings should be late enough so that seeds do not germinate until spring. Perennials can also be sown in early fall provided that there are at least 10-12 weeks of growing time before the plants go dormant for the winter. In mild climates, plant during the cooler months of the year, fall through spring, for best results. If planted early enough in the spring you w ill get flowers the first year. Once established Bee Balm is quite hardy; but for the first 4-6 weeks keep soil moist (water often if it is not raining). Will grow best in full to partial sun; moderately dry to moist, but not wet soils, tolerates sandy, clay or loam soils. Moist rich soils are best.
