This tall, graceful, dark-smokey-purple perennial grows up to 5' tall with thick hollow stems and feathery foliage, that resembles dill with masses of flat, 7+" wide clusters of nectar filled, yellow flowers on tall erect stems during summer. The leaves, stems and flowers have a strong, aniseed, licorice, taste and is used for flavoring fish and other savory dishes. this darker-leaved cultivar provides an attractive contrast in the herb garden or in the back of the boarder where it adds a soft airy, somewhat mysterious look. Bronze fennel seeds freely- remove spent flowers to prevent an oversupply of seedlings.
