Description

This is an improved cultivar bred for higher extract (baicaline) and higher root yield (BLBP02). Traditional Chinese Medicine plant; Baikal Skullcap | Chinese Skullcap | Huang Qin Low maintenance - drought-tolerant & frost-hardy; can thrive in poor soil. Bluish-purple flowers. Attractive to bees, butterflies, and birds. Young leaves are cooked as a vegetable, and whole plant is dried to make herbal tea. Dried roots are one of the Top 50 fundamental TCM herbs used in traditional healing. Used in herbal remedies for insomnia, respiratory conditions, inflammation, and liver function. Life Cycle: Perennial Height: 18-24 in Max Width: 12-18 in USDA Zone: 4-8 Light: Full Sun / Partial Sun Harvest: aerial parts - 120 days; roots - 3 years GROWING RECOMMENDATIONS: Pre-chill seeds in fridge for a 7-day cold stratification period. Sow seeds 1/8" deep in small pots/flats with moistened seed-starting mix. Spritz with water to settle into soil. Place in warm indirect sunlight and keep soil moist. Germination will occur in 10-20 days. Resize into bigger pots as needed. Transplant 4” tall seedlings 12” apart after last frost. Protect young plants during the first few winters.
