The Papaver somniferum Giganteum strain of poppy, also known as The Giant, is the variety most often cultivated for culinary use and baking. The Giganteum P. somniferum poppy is prized for the amount of seed produced by individual pods set upon gorgeous multi-colored double-petaled flowers. This Poppy variety grows to a height of 36-48 inches, produces gorgeous multi-color blooms in various shades of Red, Pink and Purple and creates huge, round seed pods. Growing Poppies: Select a sunny spot with well draining, sandy type soil. Scatter seeds and very gently rake to distribute. Cover with no more than 1/16" of soil. Mist the soil whenever it appears dry. Germination occurs in 7-20 days. Reduce frequency of irrigation once poppies reach 2-3” high as they do not like damp growing conditions. Do not plant in hot weather. These seeds DO NOT like to germinate in Mid-Summer like weather, the best planting times being Fall-thru-late Spring. Poppies do not do well as transplants.
